Moonlight on the River

Moonlight on the River

I had a good day today.  First I got several drawings done ready for watercolour painting.  After this I did the first draft of an oil painting.  It is the blocking out stage.   The picture is in moonlight with lots of snow a bridge and a dark icy river in the foreground.  In the background there are lots of trees, snow laden and peeping out from behind are  a few buildings.   They are not there yet and a very small but will provide a tiny glimpse of light against this blue/black and white canvas.     I work at this stage with palette knives and try to create a layer of texture and shapes on which to build.  The next layer will be with a mixture of large brushes and finer palette knives.  After this I will use finer brushes and define shadows, trees and contours of rocks and river.
